5 Quick Tips to Fast Tracking your Fly Fishing & Casting

Thursday 31st October 2013

We spoke to certified casting guide, Andrew Connell, about Fly Fishing and how to fast track your way into fly fishing. He pointed out that there is a distinctive difference between Fly Fishing and Casting. And gave us 5 tips, and a case study to learn from below:

Fly Fishing and Fly Casting are two distinct skills to learn:

1. How to fast track your way to being a good fly fisherman

Fly fishing takes time to become good at, but if you’re good at fishing you can pick it up quite quickly.
In addition to being a good fisherman it helps to understand where the fish are, what they require; they eat certain foods and are accessible at certain depths.

2. How to fast track your fly casting

Practice your fly casting. The more you practice the quicker you can move on and learn more advanced techniques.

3. How to fast track your fly casting

4. Selecting a rod

Select a rod based on the environment.. If you’re fishing in a lake you’ll need something quite different than to a stream.
“I fish in little creeks, and also fish in blue water, where your marlin tuna are. My rods range from 2 weight to 17 weight. A big reel that I’ve got has got a kilometer of backing on it. It’s a massive reel!”

5. Learn from a certified instructor

We run the workshops teaching people about teaching. Go through.... tell them a lot about how they need to be analysing... or how to analyse, show them. And we actually do it with groups of beginners. So they can see how to teach. Several of those people have gone on to become certified instructors.

Case Study:

As well as students. I’ve got students who will often come and prepare for trips, or may never have cast before. One student recently, never cast before, wanted to learn how to cast, come along. And he had a particular aim in mind. He wanted to go to an island and catch some bonefish. That’s what he had in mind, so we started out teaching him how to cast. And once he mastered some of the casting techniques, mastered some of the fishing techniques and also some fish fighting techniques, so it’s a little bit more than just casting.

Go for It! Get Started With Fly Fishing

I don’t just teach people to cast. I give them the tools to go away and catch fish.... how they could find the fish... where the rod position should be... whether they’re going to use the reel and how to use the reel effectively. And stripping the line in, so retrieving the line back. How we do that to try and to that to induce a fish to take the fly.
